Boston Jesters Crown Fern Basics

• Non-Toxic: Generally safe for animals and pets
• Approx. Size: Can grow 1-3 feet in size and spread
  
• Lighting: Place in bright, indirect light – in our experience, that means in a room that gets sunlight but not directly in the location where you place your fern; otherwise, it will scorch
• Watering: This is where the more advanced care comes in: Ferns grow naturally on the floor of temperate rainforests, so they like consistent moisture in the soil, but not to be waterlogged. Mist the leaves and water the soil if it even looks slightly dry. (A moisture meter works well for this.)
• Environment: The bathroom is ideal for this fern if you live in a drier environment; if you live in a more humid climate, any other room would also work. If you place in a drier environment, embrace getting a mister and make a ritual of misting at least once every morning. You can also use a home humidifier or place the plant on a tray filled with water and pebbles.
  
• Temperature: This is another place where ferns require more care, as they prefer temperatures 60ºF to 75ºF (15ºC to 24ºC). That's a narrow range! They don't like heat or cold at all and will wilt within hours if they get too hot or cold. So this isn't a good plant to leave over the weekend with the thermostat off.
• Hardiness: Ferns are not hardy at all. Don't grow them outside under most circumstances, or expose them to freezing temperatures. Bathrooms are kind of the sweet spot for most homes.

• Fertilizer: Feed with balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during growing season (Spring and Summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing in Fall and Winter.
• Re-Potting: Your Boston Fern comes in a plant large enough for at least one growing season. Re-pot every one to two years, or when roots appear bound when looking through the holes in the bottom.
• Propagation: Propagate during re-potting by dividing root ball and planting each into two separate pots.
