Why You'll Love Golden Pothos

Golden Pothos is an easy-to-care-for potted plant, making it a popular choice nationwide. Known scientifically as  Epipremnum aureum, this variety of Pothos is famous for its deep green heart-shaped leaves and trailing vines. Based on lighting conditions and other factors, the leaves can take on yellow or dark green variegation.

Benefits of Growing Golden Pothos

This tropical houseplant in the Araceae family imbues any home with a peaceful and relaxing aesthetic due to its lively color and fast-growing foliage. Because of its many benefits and relatively low care requirements, Golden Pothos makes a great gift.

  • Houseplants have been shown to provide relaxation and positive energy generally. This can help with anxiety, depression, and sleep quality.
  • Golden Pothos is associated in Feng Shui with positive growth, wealth, and good fortune, making it an excellent way to bring a positive mindset to your spaces.
  • A study showed that Golden Pothos has strong air-purifying properties, and was even more effective than the Peace Lilly at breaking down formaldehyde in the air. An excellent plant for city homes or anyone looking to increase air quality in their spaces!
  • Through evapotranspiration (look it up, it's a real word!), Golden Pothos helps regulate humidity in your home, making it perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, or humid climates generally. Remember, it's a tropical plant in nature!

Growing Golden Pathos Indoors

Pet warning: This plant is toxic to pets if ingested.

When we say 'easy care', this is about as easy as it gets for an indoor plant.

  • Light: Pothos thrives best in indirect or moderate light conditions. Brighter light conditions will yield brighter green foliage, but low light is easily tolerated. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch your plant's leaves!
  • Water: Water your Golden Pothos whenever the top inch of soil feels dry. Dry is OK for this plant, which is actually sensitive to overwatering and can rot at the roots if the soil is constantly soggy.
  • Humidity: While Golden Pothos doesn't like soggy roots, humid air is its happy place. (Remember, it's naturally tropical.) Moderate to high humidity conditions are ideal for this plant, although if your air is dry or gets dry periodically, Golden Pothos can be misted or set near a humidifier to keep it green and thriving.
  • Temperature: Sudden temperature swings aren't ideal for Golden Pothos, which thrives best in a consistent 65-85ºF range. The one thing it doesn't like at all is cold drafts, so keep it away from doorways in winter. Consistently lower temps indoors are tolerated, but growth and greenery will diminish until it warms up.
  • Fertilizer: Once per month in Spring-Summer, dilute a balanced liquid fertilizer to half strength for feeding your Golden Pothos. During the off-growing seasons, no fertilization is necessary.
  • Re-Potting: Your Golden Pothos will arrive in a perfectly sized pot and will not require re-potting for 1-2 years. After that, re-pot every 1-2 years in Spring, whenever you notice the roots starting to outgrow the pot.

Special Considerations for Outdoor Golden Pothos

  • Hardiness Zones: Golden Pothos thrives outdoors in warm, tropical zones. This includes USDA Hardiness Zones 10-12. It is highly draught-tolerant.
  • Planting: Outdoor growth can be achieved by planting directly in the ground or by placing your Golden Pothos' pot outside. Follow the same lighting, fertilizing, watering, and misting care instructions for outdoor plants as for indoor plants.

Propagation for Golden Pothos (indoor or outdoor) is through cutting: Cut a 4-6" stem with at least two leaves, add root stimulant, and place in water in a propagation tube or directly into moist soil.

Final size will be approx. 6-10 feet in length.
