Say Goodbye to Polyester & Friends

When we sourced clothing, accessories, and décor, we kept in mind that we needed lower price points for better accessibility to all users of Shop Conscious. We also kept in mind the need for diversity in designers and for designers who give back to the community in other ways. These values are all important.

However, the environmental impact of polyester, polyamide, viscose, polyacrylamide, and other synthetics is too difficult to reconcile. Wearing Conscious vehemently opposes fast fashion and environmentally destructive practices in creating new products. The devastation caused by the production of these materials is staggering in terms of both the environment and the health/well-being of the workers involved.

These products are also not built to the standard of our "Buy It for Life" principle, as the material wears out quickly, leeching microplastics into the water supply and into our bodies. Such material is also not readily recycled, leaving a wake of garbage relatively quickly after purchase.

With such overwhelming evidence, for which we have been outspoken for years, we are ending the sale of all new products created with these materials effective 11:59 PM on January 31, 2025.

We are currently sourcing clothing at all price points made of natural, low-impact materials, as well as secondhand and refurbished items in all categories. Please note, while not great, the polyester policy does not apply to any secondhand or refurbished items, as we believe the most responsible way to handle items already in circulation is to extend their utility as long as possible.
